AA Visitng School: Coal Cubed

Coal cubed is a social media project that looks to raise awareness about coal consumption within Victoria. By using contemporary rendering software such as, Unreal Engine 5, Cinema 4D and After Effects we created a serise of quick and captivating 20-30s animations. After a visit to the LaTrobe Valley and its mines we got a small understanding of the sheer size of the mines and its environmental impacts on the region. We wanted to create an engaging gateway into this problem that gives people an understanding of the scale of coal they unknowingly use in their day to day life in turn translating the things we learnt and saw whilst visiting the latrobe valley area. The coal cubed animations take a statistical look into the scale and usage of coal in everyday life, creating accurate representations of the amount of coal needed to power each location. We calculated this by finding the average kw/h used by each typical place and then finding the typical conversion of 11kw/h is equal to 1 kg of coal. Then taking this conversion and finding the correct cubic measurement for 1kg to be 9cm^3. We used these measurements to create a visual representation that could be comprehendable at a human scale.
